NBL totals: compare the number before the price
The over or under line can change the result of an NBL bet even when the decimal payout looks better.
One game can have several totals
An NBL game total is the combined score of both teams measured against a bookmaker's posted number. The over and under are separate selections. Before comparing decimal prices, write down the exact game, the selected side, the total number and the settlement period.
For example, over 174.5 and over 175.5 are different bets. If the teams combine for 175 points, the first wins and the second loses. The larger payout attached to 175.5 does not make it a better price for over 174.5.
Use the smaller fixture calendar well
The official NBL schedule supplies round, venue and tipoff details. Confirm the correct fixture before opening an odds table, especially when teams meet more than once in a season. A quote for a different game or a different total is not part of the same comparison.
When two bookmakers show over 174.5 for the same full-game market, compare their decimal payouts directly. A $100 winning stake returns $195 at 1.95 and $191 at 1.91. If only one bookmaker lists the market, the board can show its quote but cannot establish a best price across bookmakers.
What a missing total means
A blank cell can mean a bookmaker did not supply a comparable market at the time of the snapshot. It is not a zero price and should not be filled from another event or a different line. Recheck the live market at the bookmaker before using any displayed quote.
- Match the NBL fixture and full-game settlement period.
- Keep over and under separate, then match the exact total number.
- Compare decimal prices only after the number and selection agree.
Worked example
Illustration: over 174.5 at 1.95 and over 175.5 at 2.00 cannot be ranked as identical bets. A final combined score of 175 wins the first and loses the second. If two books both offer over 174.5, $100 at 1.95 returns $195, while $100 at 1.91 returns $191.
Illustrative numbers for explaining the calculation. They are not current bookmaker quotes.
Sources and method
This is an educational comparison using hypothetical prices and scores. It does not describe current NBL odds. The official schedule supports fixture identification; actual market settlement remains subject to bookmaker rules.
